There may be a number of reasons why I'm often described as "not your typical academic"
I'm told I have a lot of "energy" - I'm not sure why that makes me an atypical academic. We all know how exhausting the sector can be.
I worked in television for nearly ten years, on the Presidential campaign with Obama and appearing in the first Sex and the City movie. My students often asked me why I swapped New York for a lecture theatre,
I care A LOT. I love higher education.
I am unapologetically always about the students.
I try and engage stakeholders at all times and am usually the voice that is shouting for those that are often not heard.
The usual critics of academic leadership are often by biggest allies, recognising that I approach things in different ways.
I could go on....(maybe that is much more typical!)
It was why I chose to talk about being a different kind of academic for my Professorial inaugural lecture. I had been told multiple times in that past year that I thought differently, acted differently, treated people differently. I don't think this is a bad thing. the sector needs to evolve and those that lead it need to think creatively to get through the multiple challenges we are facing. I also believe we all need to lead with more authenticity, compassion and care, not just for our students but our staff as well.
